PrologueExcerpt from Journal of Daniella Rossi, November 15, 2012 We were not the first. We were not the last. We were those that came between. All made in His image...some far more than others. The Maker, infallible in His love, made the first of His children in His image, with great power, strength, and emotion. In addition to these abundant gifts was the most powerful of all, free will. The universe lived in perfect peace for a time before some became greedy, and the disgruntled used all He had given them to revolt, resulting in their expulsion from the Celestial plane. The displaced beings were left to plot and plan unseen amongst us on what they called the Terran, also known as Earth. Mankind was the second creation made in His image. Though He provided Mankind with the same right to choose Him, He did not bestow them with the great powers of His first children. They were many and were divided by unimportant barriers like race, nationality, creed, and sex, but even greater than all of these; they were separated by faith. The believers lived amongst the nonbelievers in perpetual battle with one another. Even within the believers themselves, conservatives clashed with liberals, the pacifists in conflict with the zealots. Whether it be political, social, economical, or out and out physical war, we as a people were at odds, our conflict instigated even more by the ones who came before us. They goaded us and harassed us, sometimes even attacking us. They hated man for what they perceived as us replacing them in the Makers heart, and for that, we were punished. War and violence displeased the Creator. In His great wisdom, He created those that came last...the Guardians. The Guardians were human-like yet had been gifted with abilities beyond us, including an unnaturally long lifespan. They walked among mankind unnoticed, protecting us from the attacks of the Infiltrators as they called them, known to us as the Fallen. The Guardians were our last great hope in the war between all the children of creation, each acting within the free will they had been granted. The war was undetected by most of the middle children, with the exception of a gifted few. I was among those able to see the subversive war brewing around us, the beautiful beings that protected us, as well as the equally beautiful who raged against us. One might think that seeing the proof would make it easier to accept the will of the Creator, but I found the opposite was true. I have had times in my life when I struggle with understanding why the Creator allows the pain and suffering and the continuing attacks of the Fallen. I even went as far as to ask a Celestial whom I spent a great deal of time with recently. Her reply was simple. She said that Love is only true when it is freely given and the Creator has a plan for me. I just have to trust it. Now that were facing the biggest battle of all, I just hope it will be enough. I dont know if any of us will survive this, but I leave my journal behind so that our story will be known. You may believe it, you may not, but all I say and share is true. You dont have to see it with your eyes to know. Open your heart and let it tell you the truth, because to have true faith means believing in that which you cannot see just as true love sometimes means making choices you never thought you'd have to make. Chapter 1 He stalked in silence through the crowded streets, fully visible, yet invisible as he blended into the masses. The Guardian followed his charge to his destination, watching all the while for a possible ambush. They crossed the crowded New York avenue unnoticed. As he followed his ward into the dark, foreboding building, he couldnt resist the urge to groan. If there was ever a place for an ambush, his charge had just walked straight into it. His instincts pulled him into full stealth mode. It was important the humans not notice, should something happen. He picked up the pace, racing in the door behind his charge. Focusing his superior vision to find him in the dark expanse ahead, he spotted the figure of his ward entering a room on the far side of the hallway. He rushed forward at lightning speed and slipped through the narrowing space just before the door closed on its own behind the man. Behind the door was a massive, empty store room bathed in a darkness so bleak it appeared to be filled with the blackest of inks. The smell of stale air littered with dust motes hit him like a brick wall as he followed into the pitch. His charge flicked on a small, handheld flashlight, filling the area in front of him with a tiny sliver of light as he stalked forward into the room. The Guardians hair stood on end as he felt the presence of a greater being before he heard it. He tensed, grasping his weapon out of the waistband of his jeans as he followed his charge deeper into the ocean of empty shadows. He heard voices in the distance when his ward reached the middle of the room, but the voices were not what motivated him to activate his weapon, the blade extending from the hilt in a golden glow. His charge and his charges companions were oblivious to the Guardians unease or the withdrawal of the weapon as he prepared to defend them from whatever lay in wait. The Guardian spun on his heel. He held his sword at the ready in front of him as a musical laugh floated through the air. A moment later, a figure entered his field of vision from behind a black pillar. "Lower your sword, Nathaniel," the familiar and comforting voice echoed through the cavernous room. Nathaniel lowered his sword, retracting the flaming blade as his body relaxed. He smiled at his consort as he reached his side. "Gabriel, it is good to see you, my brother. What brings you to the Terran this lovely evening?" He watched the ethereal beauty of his superior, one of the most beautiful of his kind. His eyes shimmered golden even in the dim light cast by Nathaniels charges minuscule light. "You are being reassigned, Nathaniel. I am sending Zandriel to replace you in the morn. Be prepared to move on to a new charge by first light." Nathaniel stared at Gabriel in shock. Reassignment was extremely rare for any Guardian. As a rule, a Guardian was given a lifelong ward to watch over, only reassigned once the lifetime of a ward had reached completion. Gabriel smiled, knowing the reason for Nathaniels surprise. "This is a very rare case that needs special care. The Master has decided that you are the best for the job." Nathaniel nodded, knowing it was not his place to question the Masters plan. "Where is my new charge located, brother?" Gabriel smiled again, a hint of mischief glinting in his perfect features. "You, my brother, will be heading to the Midwestern United States. You shall be moving to Illinois." "Chicago?" Nathaniel blurted. He had spent most of the last several decades assigned to charges in New York City. He was hoping to experience some cities in which he had yet to spend time. Gabriel chuckled, "Think more rural, Nathaniel." Nathaniels brow crinkled. He had never spent much time outside of the cityscapes. He was a high level Physical Guardian. Perhaps he was not as capable as the elite ranks of which Gabriel belonged amongst the Celestial children, but he was good at his job none the less. In the past, he had been assigned to individuals born into power and prestige, and such people spent most of their time in the city. "Does this new charge live on some private estate in the country?" Gabriel's mischievous grin widened. "Not exactly, Nathaniel. She is a little less affluent than your usual charges." Nathaniel blinked at him in bewilderment. He smiled again. "Just be ready to go at first light. Raziel will arrive to guide you at dawn." Nathaniel bowed his head in acquiescence of the messengers orders. With a slow smile and a responding nod, a flash of light blinked in front of Nathaniel as Gabriel dematerialized. Nathaniel returned his attention to the conversation going on between his charge and his cohorts. He internally groaned at the thought of leaving the city to take on a new charge in a rural setting. Guarding in an urban setting was much less difficult than a rural setting because it made it far easier to blend in. In rural settings, and small towns in particular, everyone knew the others surrounding them. A stranger tended to stand out. This meant that instead of being an invisible face in the crowd, Nathaniel would need to create a life and identity for himself. He would have to become a member of the society of this small area. This was well outside his previous experience, and for a moment, he was concerned that he might not be up for the challenge. Thus far in his time as a Terran Guardian, he had been able to exist as he saw fit, not having to emulate the habits and social rigors of Terran society. Now everything was about to change. Just as he began to get lost in his thoughts, letting his guard down for the slightest of moments, his body reacted to another presence in the room outside of his charge and his charges companions. Nathaniel once again tensed, drawing out his fire blade at the ready with lightning fast reflexes. He could hear three beings with malicious intent circling the room, bounding from the rafters to the tops of the pylons and back to the cold concrete floor. He narrowed his eyes and heightened his sense of sight, seeing the blur of motion in the far right corner and another just to his left, about ten feet away. His ward concluded his conversation before he turned to make his way toward the exit. Nathaniel could hear the Infiltrators shifting locations, closing in on their position as he backed his way out of the room, standing closer than he typically dared to his charges back. Just before the door closed behind them, the flash of a pale face, ringed in dark hair came into view in the space of the closing portal. Nathaniels muscles tightened more when he recognized the ethereal beauty of Naziers face just moments before the door slammed closed. Nathaniel continued to keep watch as they exited the building, relieved that the trio of Infiltrators did not follow. It concerned him though. What would Nazier be doing in New York? Beyond that, why did he not attack when he had the chance? He was, without a doubt, superior in skill and ability, having been a member of the elite order of the Celestial realm, once working alongside Gabriel himself. It did not make sense to Nathaniel. He worried for the safety of his replacement Guardian, not to mention his charge, of whom he had become quite fond over the nearly forty years in which he had protected him. Nathaniel followed his charge home, watching as he settled in for a nights sleep from his apartment across the street. Once satisfied that his ward was safe for the night, he set about the task of packing his meager belongings for his trip to the rural Midwest, concerned about the challenges that lay ahead of him.

PrologueDaniella Rossi, Journal Excerpt February 12, 2013 When I first arrive, I can tell Im in the open. Its cold and theres an obvious snow pack under my feet. Its sort of crusty and thick, so that every step is accompanied by a loud crunching sound as I sink into the cold. I cant see much around me thanks to a very dense white fog. I move forward toward something I can sense, but its unclear. Im not sure what it is, but I know for a fact its not a Guardian or a Fallen. I walk for several long minutes, only able to see a few feet in front of me, until I come into the center of a small village. There are rows of tiny stores that look as if they are throwbacks to the Old West. The street is empty though, with the exception of one form standing in the middle of the road, looking into the white expanse beyond us. I walk toward the shadowed outline, which is small and most definitely childlike. The closer I get, the louder the sound of the soft sob emanating from the person. It takes forever to reach the child, but when I do, I kneel, the snow instantly soaking through my pants to make my knee tingle with the intense chill. I place a hand on the childs shoulder and ask in a voice that sounds far away and almost foreign, "Are you okay? Do you need any help?" The child continues to sob, so I shift myself before what I can now see is a little boy with light brown hair peeking under the edges of his thick, navy blue parka. "Are you hurt or lost? Can you tell me your name?" The child looks up, tears streaming down from his soft blue eyes. His voice is small and tinny, like my own, as if Im listening to him through a bad phone connection. "Please help us, Dani. We need you to help us." His little cheeks are bright red from the cold, his nose brighter than Rudolphs. I cup my gloved hands on his cheeks to warm them. I will, I promise. Just tell me what you need. "Just come help us, please. If you dont, then well end up just like them." I take off my scarf and wrap it around his little neck, being sure to help cover his exposed skin before rubbing his hands between mine to give him extra warmth. "Just like who, sweetheart? Where are you?" The fog grows thicker as the boy stands there, keeping me in his pleading gaze as he slowly disappears from view. "Whats your name, little boy? Where are you? How can I help?" He doesnt answer any of my questions as the white fog engulfs him and he disappears. I scramble sightlessly to find him, but there is no trace. Hes gone. Just before I wake up from my attempts to find him while stumbling in the blanket of white, I hear his young voice in the air. "Please, Dani. Please help us." Thats it . . . thats how the dreams end every night that I have them. The dreams were random at first, but now theyre coming every night and feeling more real. I just wish I knew who he was. My heart aches for him . . . I have to find a way to help him. I just have to.

J.D has always been a writer, always dreaming and thinking of ideas for stories or plot lines, she just never sat down and put pen to paper until the fall of 2008. One thing led to another until eventually she gathered her courage to enter the first part of her original novel into the 2010 Original Fiction Contest at The Writer's Coffee Shop. That story went on to win the young adult category and led to her contract to release the first novel in her Children of Creation series: Convergence.

When not writing, J.D devotes most of her spare time to her husband and two young children, honing her Playstation 3 skills, as well as card, board, dice, etc games. She also enjoys curling up with a good book or diving into a good story posted on the online community that led to where she is today. In addition to reading, she loves indulging in movies and music, her eclectic tastes earning chuckles at times.

Born in Southeast Missouri, J.D moved to Central Illinois in the early nineties and has remained in the general vicinity ever since. Her home state of Illinois is the primary setting for Convergence.

I am currently working on the third novel in the series, which I believe will be the last unless the characters decide otherwise. Maelstrom is currently scheduled for an August 2012 release.

I have a few other plot bunnies, but they are currently taking a back seat until the Children of Creation series is completed.
